Sandy Walsh

Sandy plays the part of Sarah in the Activated Image's production of Patience by Jason Sherman.

Recently Sandy starred as Frances Marden in Emmerdale (Yorkshire TV) for 12 months. Other television roles include Barbara in Peep Show (Channel 4), Mrs Conway in Doctors (BBC 1), and Marion in Holby City (BBC1).

Sandy studied English and Drama in Birmingham. She has performed seven one-woman shows including: Ecocide (for which she won a Fringe First at the Edinburgh Festival) Bed Among the Lentils (Bridewell Theatre) and in 2002 Correspondent (Bridewell Theatre and The Assembly Rooms, Edinburgh where it was a sell out success). Seasons at the Crucible Theatre, Sheffield, The Victoria Theatre, Stoke, Birmingham Rep and the Everyman Theatre, Cheltenham. Roles have included Lulu in The Birthday Party, Minnie in Shadow of a Gunman, Helena in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Zanche in The White Devil, Ginny in Relatively Speaking, Chelsea in On Golden Pond, Muriel in Soldiering On, and Doreen in Doris and Doreen. She played both Mrs Lyons and Mrs Johnston in the award-winning show Blood Brothers in the West End.

Her work in radio has been extensive. Radio plays include Miss Pinkerton in Vanity Fair, Jan in White Out, Edge of the Pier, Liz in Falling Through Italy, Tales the Countess Told with Eleanor Bron, and For Richer, For Poorer with Simon Russell-Beale (all for BBC Radio 4). She is also a familiar voice on many commercials including Wella, Ariel, Safeway, Huggies, Colgate and her own personal favorite ‘Za Za The Cat’ in the Virgin commercials.

Sandy’s work as a presenter for the BBC World Service includes co-presenting the Sony award-winning programme Talking Point and anchoring news programmes such as World Briefing and Reporting Religion. Other presentation credits include many broadcasts from The Proms, the arts programme Meridian Live and Good Books. She has interviewed many well-known names including Baroness Barbara Castle, Terry Waite and Benjamin Zefeniah.
